Labor’s strategy to unlock Macquarie Point’s potential
Only Labor has a strategy to fix Macquarie Point’s water and sewerage problem
Liberals have no plan to move the treatment plant
Labor’s policy addresses Mac Point, Launceston storm water and Cameron Bay
The development of Macquarie Point has the potential to unlock hundreds of millions of dollars of investment and create hundreds of jobs in both the short and long term.
Shadow Minister for Local Government and Public Planning Madeleine Ogilvie said only Labor had a proposal to fix Macquarie Point’s water and sewerage problem for good.
“By partnering with industry super funds to pay for the relocation of the treatment plant, we can clear the way for the project to proceed,” Ms Ogilvie said.
“Will Hodgman has admitted that under the Liberals the Macquarie Point vision will not become a reality for 30 years.
“Only Labor is serious about unlocking hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of investment immediately.
“Progress on the project has been too slow, and while Labor is impressed by the attitude of interim CEO Mary Massina, the treatment plant remains a sticking point.
“The Liberal Government does not have a solution for the sewerage works and Labor does.
“We can’t unlock the potential of Macquarie Point without doing the basics first and moving the treatment plant is non-negotiable.
“From an economic and environmental point of view, that part of the project must be completed sooner rather than later.
“If the Liberals don’t support Labor’s strategy to fund the project, where is their alternative?
“We can’t wait decades for action at Macquarie Point, we need investment and full-time employment now.”
