Future Secured for Rural Community Care Organisation
The future is bright for rural not-for-profit South Eastern Community Care (SEC Care), as the organisation gears up for the official opening of their first independently owned headquarters.
After 45 years operating out of leased buildings, SEC Care has secured their future by purchasing and restoring the old Sorell Council Chambers, located in Somerville Street Sorell.
SEC Care CEO Helen Pollard said after much hard work, the organisation was looking forward to the official opening and was privileged to have the Premier of Tasmania, the Hon. Will Hodgman MP, open the building.
“With all the changes happening with aged care in 2017, there has never been a more important time to have safe-guards in place for supporting our elders living in rural communities,” Ms Pollard said.
“Owning and operating out of our own building will secure our future as a community care provider, as well as the future of many individuals who wish to remain independent in rural parts of Southern Tasmania. “
Premier Hodgman congratulated SEC Care for its work empowering people to live in their own homes and thrive in their communities.
“It’s the role of the community, government and business to create a culture of support, particularly for active ageing in Tasmania,” Mr Hodgman said.
“We know that Tasmania has the oldest and most rapidly ageing population of all States so it’s important that there are initiatives like this in place to support Tasmanians when they need it.”
SEC Care started with a small group of passionate nurses working from car boots in 1970. Today, the organisation has over 100 staff and volunteers that support 800 clients in rural and regional parts of Southern Tasmania.
“SEC Care operates solely for the purpose of supporting people to live safe, healthy and happy lives in their homes, no matter where they live,” Ms Pollard said.
“Under the Consumer Directed Care model (as of February 2017), consumers of community care have more choice than ever before, and we are thrilled to be in a position to facilitate that choice.”
SEC Care provides a range of flexible in-home care, community support and centre-based services to people who require assistance in Southern Tasmania. They have three Day Centres located at Sorell, Brighton and Orford, offering a wide range of services and activities for SEC Care clients and their carers.
