Find Your Feet Outdoor Gear Shop, Mon Apr 3, 6.15pm: Star Mountains slide show, talk

Posted on

In November 2016, local adventurers Grant Dixon and Chris Sharples undertook a low-key expedition to the Star Mountains in remote western Papua New Guinea.

With minimalist, “back-of-the-envelope” planning they flew to the mining town of Tabubil, negotiated with the local landowners for access, then undertook a three-week trek into these very wet, rugged and uninhabited mountains.

They ascended through cloud forest and scrub to make ascents of two near-4000m glaciated peaks (possibly the first ascents for 40 years).

They also completed a subsequent week-long circuit trek to visit the soaring, mist-shrouded Hindenburg Wall, a 600m limestone escarpment that discontinuously traverses 50km of western PNG.

Hear about the trials and tribulations of the trip and view a selection of Grant’s stunning photographs at Find Your Feet, upstairs at 107 Elizabeth St, at 6:15pm, Monday 3rd April 2017.
