Turnbull cuts Tassie adrift to look after big coal

Posted on

The federal government’s suggestion that Clean Energy Finance Corporation money will be used on so-called “clean coal” will impact on Tasmania’s capacity to fund renewable energy projects, Greens Senator for Tasmania Nick McKim says.

“Malcolm Turnbull’s love affair with the coal industry will come at a cost to Tasmania, because the CEFC has a finite pool of funds,” Senator McKim said.

“Every dollar that goes into coal is a dollar not spent on renewable energy, which is one of Tasmania’s biggest competitive advantages.”

“The CEFC, which was delivered by the Greens, was designed to fund renewable energy, not to throw yet another lifeline to the dying coal sector.”

“Funding coal instead of renewable energy will mean less energy security for Tasmania and fewer Tasmanian jobs.”

“Labor’s refusal to rule out supporting Mr Turnbull’s attack on the CEFC gives the lie to their claims of a strong climate policy.”
