Tasmania’s Raptors’ Brighter Future
BirdLife Tasmania today welcomed the launch of the new Raptor
Rehabilitation Program at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.
The program is a collaboration between TasNetworks and Bonorong, and will
see improved specialist care available to injured eagles and other raptor
(birds of prey) species in Tasmania.
“The program is a much needed and much welcomed effort by TasNetworks
and Bonorong to improve the care provided to injured eagles and other birds
of prey in Tasmania” BirdLife Tasmania’s Convenor, Dr Eric Woehler said.
“With Tasmania’s largest eagle, the Wedge-tailed Eagle already listed as
Endangered, any and all efforts to rehabilitate and release injured birds back
into the wild will make a significant contribution to the conservation of this
magnificent species” Dr Woehler added.
Two vets will receive specialist training on the mainland thanks to funding by
TasNetworks.
“These vets will bring specialist treatments and care procedures to injured
raptors in Tasmania” Dr Woehler noted, “This will improve the chances of
successful rehabilitation and release back into the wild”.
BirdLife Tasmania welcomed the partnership between TasNetworks and
Bonorong, and said that it demonstrated how partnerships resulted in the
best outcomes.
