Students support Fair Work Commission decision on penalty rates

Posted on

The student union at the University of Tasmania, the Tasmania University Union (TUU) today announced its support of the Fair Work Commission decision to reduce some penalty rates for retail, fast food and hospitality jobs.

Clark Cooley, President of the Tasmania University Union said “These changes will provide new opportunities for businesses to hire new staff, expand their trading hours, and increase the availability of services”

“Today’s decision will benefit thousands of students who want to work on weekends but have found that businesses, especially small businesses, haven’t been able to afford opening their doors on Sundays”

“Students overwhelmingly work in the retail, fast food and hospitality sector to help fund themselves while they study, however many find it hard to get a job. These changes will allow businesses to hire more staff, which will help students earn a living” Mr Cooley continued.

The Tasmania University Union (TUU) was founded in 1899 as the state-wide representative body for all students of the University of Tasmania. The TUU seeks to advance the rights and protect the interests of students by ensuring the their voices are heard by parliamentarians, policy makers, university leadership and the wider community.
