Penalty rates decision will hurt thousands of Tasmanians

 Cuts to penalty rates will affect Tasmanians who can’t afford it
 Decision comes as Tasmania faces a full-time employment crisis
 Unlike the Libs, Labor will fight to protect penalty rates

The Fair Work Commission’s decision to cut penalty rates will hurt thousands of Tasmanians who can least afford it.

Labor Leader Bryan Green said the cuts for low-paid workers come as the state faces a full-time employment crisis.

“Cutting penalty rates will make life harder for so many Tasmanian families,” Mr Green said.

“We’ve seen around 5000 full-time jobs disappear in the last 12 months, now they are cutting the pay of casual and part-time workers.

“It’s a huge blow for low-paid workers who are already struggling to make ends meet.

“As Labor Leader, I made a submission* in support of penalty rates. Unfortunately we heard nothing from the Premier.

“No doubt we’ll now hear something glib from Will Hodgman like he “respects the umpire’s decision”. That’s pathetic when he failed to make a submission.

“Labor on the other hand will always fight for the rights of low-paid workers and stand up for the retention of penalty rates.”
