Older cars an easy target for thieves

Posted on

A recent report from Tasmania Police indicates that more than 300 cars were stolen in Tasmania in the last three months, with 80 per cent of the car stolen over 10 years old.

RACT Insurance CEO Trent Sayers says car theft continues to be a significant community impact issue.

“We continue to be surprised at the amount of non-forced entry thefts we see, where people have simply forgotten to lock their car, allowing thieves easy access to their vehicle,” said Mr Sayers.

“It is a timely reminder for people to always lock their car doors and don’t assume just because it’s an old car that it’s not a target.

“When you think about the cost of suddenly losing your vehicle, even a vehicle of lower value can add up to a significant loss, which can then have a large impact on your family and your livelihood.

“There’s several things you can do to protect your vehicle from theft such as using a wheel lock or immobilizer, park in well-lit areas or in a secured garage, repair broken windows, and be sure to always lock your doors.

“And for those times when security devices do fail, it’s important to make sure that you’re properly insured.”
