Terminal upgrades to provide visitors an instant taste of Tasmania

Posted on

Visitors arriving at Hobart Airport this summer will be greeted by a Tasmanian experience with the completion of the $15 million arrivals hall redevelopment.
The new terminal will service the needs of Tasmanians and the growing Tasmanian tourism industry.
Hobart Airport has seen an increase of over 300 thousand passengers over the past three years, with over 2.3 million passengers expected to use the airport this year.
Hobart Airport CEO, Rod Parry said the project’s completion is an important milestone in the airport’s terminal redevelopment program.
“As part of the arrivals redevelopment project we were passionate about continuing to develop Hobart Airport as the premier gateway for Tasmania, and we wanted to achieve this in a way that provides a special Tasmanian arrival experience for our guests.” Mr Parry said.
To help develop a terminal with a Tasmanian feel, architect, Misho Vasiljevich, worked with several local artists, designers and craftsmen to create an open space, representative of our state’s natural beauty.
The unmistakable Tasmanian design and craftsmanship includes mammoth blue gum seating, salvaged by the team from Black Hand furniture. It also provides the opportunity to engage visitors with the amazing Tasmanian Devils created by Ruth Waterhouse already proving a popular photo opportunity.
All artists were very excited to be involved in the project and saw it as a great opportunity to create a unique welcome to our state.
Improving the operational functionality, customer journey and ensuring safety were essential parts of the project.
The redevelopment has delivered efficient new baggage collection facilities, incorporated car rental desks inside the arrivals hall and relocated the car rental collection area for easier car pick up.
The arrivals area also includes a new café, Market Place, featuring local produce, which has been busy place with both locals and travellers.
Over the past three years, Hobart Airport has delivered a range of important infrastructure projects, including the relocation of security screening facilities, new airfield lighting systems, pedestrian pathways, parking areas and administration offices.
“This project has been a great achievement for our terminal redevelopment team and the 200 Tasmanian’s who have contributed to its completion. But we haven’t finished the terminal redevelopment yet, with phase two of the redevelopment program, the departures area, set to commence in 2017,” Mr Parry said.
