… NO to a reclassification of Alder shotgun into Category D

The first commercially available level action shotgun was releases in 1887 by Winchester; no lever action firearm has ever been used in a mass shooting or any gun crime. The Adler A110 shotgun like all lever action shotguns are sporting firearms not military firearms and a reclassification to category D is not based on evidence or factual information.

SFP Tasmania calls on the state government NOT to support a reclassification of the Alder shotgun A110 into category D.

SFP Tasmania also calls on all political parties NOT to support a reclassification of the Alder shotgun A110 into category D.

The way firearms laws work in Australia, there needs to be a consensus from the states and territories about how to classify firearms. Regardless if you use firearms or not, decisions like this must be based on facts and evidence and disregard emotional arguments – emotional arguments do not make good policy or rules.

SFP Tasmania strongly believes a reclassification of the Adler A110 into category D will cause backlash in the community and will do nothing other than victimise thousands of innocent law abiding sports men and women and those who work or whom support regional communities across the State.

It is important for rules to be based on fact, not based on incidents, or simply based on lies and propaganda. A shotgun with five or seven shell capacity is nothing to be concerned about; it’s a tool like thousands of other firearms which have been in use for over 150 years, which have never been used in a crime within Australia.

There is not a suggestion of “watering down” current firearms rules, however it is important to remember legal firearms ownership have never been a problem in Australia, the focus must be on illegal importation and other associated criminal activity.

True facts about the Adler Lever Action Shotgun

Lever action firearms

Each actioning of the lever requires the operator’s finger to be removed from the trigger. A lever action firearm uses a lever located around the trigger guard area of a firearm to load cartridges into the chamber of the barrel.

The lever action is not new technology

Lever action technology was invented in the 1860s, making it over 150 years old. This type of firearm is not new to Australia. Since 1887 lever action shotguns have been available in Australia including models with more than 7 round capacity. In 1996, lever action firearms were classified as ‘Category A’ and there have been no safety issues.

The Adler is different to the lever action shotguns already in Australia

The only differences are cosmetic. The Adler simply has a more modern and ergonomic design relative to other models of lever action shotgun and a lighter weight alloy receiver.

The Adler’s capabilities have been exaggerated beyond all reason. Most European countries allow their citizens to own semi auto shotguns which have a higher firing rate, even the UK which have some of the strictest gun laws in the developed world.
