Matthew Groom set to scrap discount heating tariff
Groom breaks promise to Tasmanians on electricity tariff
Minister goes back on his August 2015 commitment
Government has not responded to petition from concerned energy users
Tariff 41 will disappear on Energy Minister Matthew Groom’s watch and the tariff that provides cheaper hot water and heating is already on the rise.
Labor Leader Bryan Green said this is a broken promise by Mr Groom, who is ignoring the community.
Tariff 41, or Hydroheat, is a concession heating tariff used by approximately 80,000 homes to heat and cool homes as well as run hot water.
Mr Groom promised to protect Tariff 41 in a newspaper interview in August 2015 but it was today revealed in Government Business Enterprise hearings that the Tariff is already on the rise and it will be abolished.
“Today the evidence is clear – Tariff 41 will go and Matthew Groom has broken his promise to protect it,” Labor Leader Bryan Green said.
“TasNetworks admitted in GBE hearings that Tariff 41 is already on the rise.
“Matthew Groom refused to guarantee Tariff 41 would remain.
“Labor tabled a petition of 450 Tasmanians more than a year ago calling on the Government to protect Tariff 41 – it is now clear why Matthew Groom has not responded.
“He’s simply not listening to his community. What’s worse, he has been caught out lying to their face.”
