Taking action on Wicked Campers

Posted on

The Hodgman Liberal Government is taking strong action to ensure that camper vans, such as those operated by Wicked Campers and which display deeply offensive signage, are not allowed on Tasmanian roads.
I am pleased to announce the Government will make legislative changes to cancel the registration of any vehicles belonging to such operators that display offensive material when it does not meet the appropriate standard of the Advertising Standards Board.
These changes will have the same effect as those recently announced in Queensland, and will be introduced to Parliament upon its return next year.
These changes come after I have previously raised concerns publically about the vile and appalling signage on some Wicked Camper vans, as they are offensive to both women and men and distressing to parents who should not have their children confronted with such advertising.
In the interim period before the legislation can be introduced, I will be asking the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner to refer to me, as of today, any particular vehicles that have generated a level of complaints from the public.
Should that occur, the Government will then consider responsible measures including discussions with the Minister responsible for our National Parks the possibility of advising the registered owners of those vehicles that their vehicle will not be able to enter any National Parks in Tasmania until the Advertising Standards Board has made a favourable ruling on the particular signage.
Further, should this step occur we will write to all local Government bodies in Tasmania to warn them of these particularly offensive vehicles and encourage them to consider that any Council owned facilities such as camping grounds could ban these vehicles to protect their customers from what is essentially an assault on families, particularly young people, and women and girls.
This is strong action that sends the appropriate message to Wicked Campers, or any other company operating such vehicles, who believes they can display disgusting signage on our roads with impunity that it will not be tolerated in Tasmania.
