Out of home care service provider under review
Improving care for our most vulnerable children is a priority for the Hodgman Liberal Government.
The Government takes child protection seriously which is why we announced a $20.6 million redesign of the Child Safety Services aimed at early intervention earlier this year.
This is supported by our push to introduce minimum mandatory sentencing for serious child sex offenders.
I want to make it clear that allegations raised against the service Safe Pathways were already under investigation before they were aired last night.
Safe Pathways currently provides individually tailored special care packages for 11 children with complex needs.
Each of these children will be visited today and the child in question on the program has been removed from the care of Safe Pathways.
A review of service delivery is underway by the DHHS Quality Improvement and Workforce Development Unit and the existing Terms of Reference will be extended to include analysis of financial arrangements put in place by Safe Pathways to support children in their care.
It was under the previous government that residential care and special care packages were first outsourced to the non-Government sector.
If the Opposition and Greens are serious about protecting the state’s most vulnerable, they should support this Government’s push to introduce minimum mandatory sentencing against serious child sex offenders.
We want to stop children coming into out of home care in the first place, which is why the Hodgman Government’s Child Safety Services, Strong Families-Safe Kids Implementation Plan outlines all the actions we are taking for these vulnerable children.
