EPA hint at ending governance failure in Macquarie Harbour

Posted on

Environment Tasmania cautiously welcomes today’s announcement by EPA Director, Wes Ford, that the salmon production limit in Macquarie Harbour will be cut.

“We cautiously welcome Mr Ford’s announcement that the government will finally take some action to prevent salmon companies from breaking the law and harming the environment in Macquarie Harbour,” said Laura Kelly, Strategy Director at Environment Tasmania.

“The million dollar question is what limit will be set.”

“To end uncertainty for investors and stop the environmental harm, the obvious solution is for the EPA to return production to 2012 levels – the 9,000 tonne cap that existed prior to production levels being tripled and oxygen levels in the water crashing.”

“The water pollution limits which Minister Rockliff removed to pave the way for his decision in April to increase production to 21,500 tonnes, also need to be returned to licence conditions,” Ms Kelly said.
