Workplace bullying on the rise as Premier sets bad example

Posted on

• 33% of public servants have witnessed workplace bullying
• More than 1 in 5 workers have personally experienced bullying
• Premier’s handling of Hidding scandal sets terrible example

The latest survey across Tasmania’s public service highlights an alarming rate of bullying.

Labor Leader Bryan Green said the Premier is not setting a good example for his workforce.

“More than one in five public sector workers are experiencing bullying,” Mr Green said.

“An alarming 33 per cent of public servants say they have witnessed bullying over the past 12 months.

“22 per cent have personally experienced bullying.

“The concerning results come at the same time as the Premier’s is failing to properly address a bullying scandal involving his own senior minister.

“By not even reaching out to see if Ruth Forrest was ok, Will Hodgman has set a very disappointing example for his workforce.

“Workplace culture starts at the top and the Premier has failed over the past few weeks to properly deal with an allegation of bullying.

“He’s sent an alarming message to victims of bullying that their side of the story won’t be heard.

“The Premier must explain exactly what he plans to do to improve the culture within the public service and eradicate bullying.”
