University’s new vision for science-centric CBD in Hobart
EXCITEMENT is building about the prospect of another new University of Tasmania precinct in Hobart’s CBD, according to vice chancellor Peter Rathjen.
Infrastructure Australia has asked the university to submit a detailed business proposal for the university to move its science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) research and teaching functions to a 23,000 square-metre site on the corner of Argyle and Melville streets, Professor Rathjen told the Sunday Tasmanian.
“That has to happen in the next few weeks,’’ he said.
Prof Rathjen said Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and other federal Government ministers were also expressing enthusiasm for the venture and its potential to transform Hobart’s society and economy.
“The Prime Minister’s point of view is that he’s excited by the fact that STEM has to be at the heart of whatever we do,’’ he said.
