Special Timbers Sector Encouraged by Forestry Announcement
The Tasmanian Special Timbers Alliance welcomes yesterday’s announcement from Tasmanian Forestry Minister Guy Barnett.
Andrew Denman of the Tasmanian Special Timbers Alliance (TSTA) said;
“It has been acknowledged by both sides of politics that the TFA did not deliver the required outcomes for the specialty timber sector. The continued support for the sector through development of the new Special Timbers Management Plan is a key part of the Government’s growth strategy for the industry and will ensure a sustainable, long term supply of specialty timbers for the State’s iconic and culturally significant special timbers industry.”
“Access to the Future Potential Production Forest for specialty timber harvesting from October 2017 is not about ‘ideological logging’ or re-starting the forest “wars” as claimed by some, it is purely about ensuring that the industry has access to a small volume of specialty timber on a sustainable basis in perpetuity, ensuring that the areas we harvest from are properly managed for conservation and ensuring that the rich cultural heritage surrounding this industry is safeguarded for future generations. “
“TSTA welcomes the Government’s approach and believes that the implementation of the Special Timbers Management Plan in late 2017 will provide this iconic sector with sustainable resource security and introduce a much needed stable investment environment.”
“TSTA also acknowledges the high level of bi-partisan support for the sector from Tasmanian Labor.”
