Rene Hidding needs to explain alleged incident
• Former Liberal Leader said Hidding’s behaviour “incensed” female staff member
• Minister says matter was “dealt with”
• Premier must finally act over bullying saga
Police Minister Rene Hidding must explain the nature of the alleged incident described by a former Liberal Leader in a political memoir, which led to Mr Hidding allegedly being reprimanded at an official party meeting.
Labor Leader Bryan Green said the alleged incident during Rene Hidding’s time in opposition points to a pattern of concerning behaviour.
“Rene Hidding conceded during Question Time that the incident in question was dealt with during a meeting of the party,” Mr Green said.
“What was the nature of the incident that Mr Cheek said left a female staff member “incensed” by Rene Hidding’s behaviour?
“Coupled with the allegations levelled against Rene Hidding by Independent MLC Ruth Forrest, this incident points to a pattern of ugly behaviour and Minister’s refusal to take responsibility for his actions.
The excerpt from Bob Cheek’s political memoir reads: “They all loathed Hidding and were convinced he would take over if I didn’t. Hidding was arrogant and treated staff the same way. One staff member was so incensed about Hidding’s behaviour at an office drinks function she wanted something done about it. The complaints continued, mainly to Peter Hodgman and me, and in an effort to defuse the situation Peter raised the issue at a party meeting where we both demanded that Hidding mend his ways.” (Page 220, Confessions of a Ferret Salesman)
“Did Rene Hidding threaten Bob Cheek, or the staff member involved, with legal action in the same way he has intimidated Ruth Forrest?
“The Premier must finally show leadership and deal with a saga that has dragged on for more than three weeks.
“Will Hodgman has no choice but to address his Minister’s behaviour.”
