Neighbourhood Watch Tasmania celebrates 30 years of community engagement

Posted on

The Tasmanian State body overseeing Neighbourhood Watches is celebrating 30 years of engagement with communities and supporting crime prevention in local areas.

Back in 1986 it was the drive of Dr Michael Readett that saw this organisation form and at that time there were more than 150 Watches Statewide.

Although numbers are no longer at those levels, theinnovative use of technology and social media allows the community safety messages to be communicated across the State.

State President, Jan Dunsby, commended the many volunteers who have contributed to Neighbourhood Watch over the years.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation and do an amazing job keeping up connections in their local communities. Whether it be producing a local newsletter, fundraising, running events or meeting regularly to be aware of crime trends, every contribution is valued by our organisation” said Ms Dunsby.

Two event are being run to acknowledge the anniversary and are being held during National Neighbourhood Watch week.

The Southern event is at the new KGV complex, Glenorchy, on Wednesday 5 October, whilst northern members will celebrate at Pier01, Ulverstone, on Wednesday 12 October. Attendees will receive a range of merchandise promoting Neighbourhood Watch week and will share in a celebratory cake.
