Groom bets it all on a second Bass Strait cable

Energy Minister Matthew Groom appears to be heading to tomorrow’s meeting of the COAG Energy Council with just one policy; asking the other states to pay for a second Bass Strait interconnector.

Labor Leader Bryan Green said the Minister is in danger of putting all his eggs in one basket.

“Matthew Groom is going to the meeting cap in hand, hoping the other states will sign up to pay for a second interconnector,” Mr Green said.

“He’s raised expectations so much that anything less than a commitment from the other states to fund a second cable will be a failure.

“But so far The Minister has been unable to build a case for a second, regulated Bass Strait link.

“Unlike Labor, the Government has no policy to increase Tasmania’s renewable energy generation capacity.

“Labor’s ‘Target 500’ policy aims to install an additional 500MW of renewable energy generation over the next decade.

“We would work with the Clean Energy Finance Corporation to secure up to $200 million in public financing for eligible projects.

“That is how you’d build a case for a second interconnector.

“Matthew Groom should adopt Labor’s policy to show he’s serious about investing in renewable energy.”
