Comment invited on Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Bill 2016
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is a much loved Tasmanian institution that has preserved and shared our history and heritage for the benefit of the Tasmanian community for more than 150 years.
The tourism and cultural industries are increasingly important drivers of our economy and TMAG needs a modern governance system to ensure that it continues as one of our premier historical, cultural and scientific destinations.
In delivering on our commitment in the 2015-16 Next 365 Days Plan to report on the legislative and governance of the arts sector, the Government has prepared draft legislation that establishes a modern legal framework to provide greater clarity on the roles and responsibilities for the management and operation of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
The draft Bill establishes the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery as a statutory authority with a broad, skills based Board responsible for the strategic management of TMAG that is accountable to the relevant Minister of the Crown for the delivery of the Board’s functions and the exercise of its powers. It provides a clear corporate planning structure for the management and operation of the TMAG
The Tasmanian Government is seeking feedback on the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery Bill 2016.
