BP’s decision to pull out of the Bight is a win for the Tasmanian coast
Greens spokesperson for Healthy Oceans and Senator for Tasmania, Peter Whish-Wilson welcomes today’s decision by BP to pull out of oil exploration in the marine sanctuary of the Great Australian Bight.
Senator Whish-Wilson said, “BP’s own modelling and separate independent modelling showed that any oil spill from drilling in the Bight would impact Tasmania’s North-West coast, the pristine beaches of the Tarkine, and our world-beating fishing and tourism industries.
“As was demonstrated in the Gulf of Mexico and recently off our own NW shelf WA, the risk of oil spills are very real, and can be catastrophic to our marine environment.
“It was never worth the risk and now we need to ensure oil exploration is permanently stopped along in this amazing stretch of our nations coastline,” he concluded.
