A statement on Gretna animal cruelty allegations
The claims of animal cruelty at the Gretna Quality Meats slaughterhouse in the Derwent Valley, if true, are appalling.
The State Government must intervene immediately and halt tomorrow’s proposed slaughter until these allegations have been investigated. I have written to the Premier to that effect.
This is another example of why there is a pressing need for a federal independent Office of Animal Welfare, so that alleged animal welfare breaches like this can be properly investigated.
