Energy Minister must give Tasmanians confidence over hydro assets

Energy Minister Matthew Groom must take immediate steps to reassure Tasmanians that the future of our hydro generation system is secure.

Labor’s Rebecca White said the leaking of an explosive internal report suggests there is serious concern within Hydro about the company’s maintenance program.

“Hydro management may be ‘comfortable’ with the situation but that is clearly not a view shared by everyone in the organisation,” Ms White said.

“Matthew Groom must take steps to reassure Tasmanians that the future of our hydro-electric system is secure.

“He should start by demanding that the report be released publicly.

“How does Minister Groom plan to maintain 100 per cent of Hydro’s generating asset?

“Does he now concede his government got it horribly wrong by chasing 90 per cent dividends from Hydro while abandoning sound energy security practices.

“The Minister and Treasurer’s demand of a $75 million dividend, that Hydro couldn’t afford, completely undermined energy security in Tasmania.

“Over two and a half years the Liberals have consistently put profits ahead of energy security and it’s hurt Tasmania badly.

“Now Matthew Groom is faced with an enormous energy infrastructure challenge. Is he going take it on or will his arrogant hands-off approach to government continue?”
