Trans Camp 2016: Seeking Campers and Volunteers

Posted on

Friday September 30th to Sunday October 2nd

Australia’s Inaugural National camp for the Transgender Community will take place in Southern Tasmania in just over a month.

The camp welcomes members of the Transgender Community, as well as their family and friends of all ages, from across Tasmania and around Mainland Australia.

The camp will include events such as access to hundreds of items of free clothing, generously donated by the Tasmanian community, as well as a fashion show, board games, art workshops, ‘Self Defence’ and ‘Have and Stab at Fencing’ sessions.

Workshops will include ‘Surgery 101’, ‘Pre Op Crowdfunding’, ‘Mental Health’, ’Internet Safety’, ‘Your Rights At Work (Tas)’ and ‘Skills to gain employment’, among others.

The camp promises a long weekend of fun activities and workshops, with plenty of time to relax and make friends. The location, although a mystery until payment is received from campers, consists of cabin accommodation in a beautiful bush setting.

Trans Camp 2016 is the vision of Avery Holderness-Roddam, organiser of Transgender Tasmania. Avery, not content with the monthly meetups run by his group, decided to provide the community with something more substantial. Avery wants camp-goers to have a weekend of feeling safe to be themselves, where they can make friends with other individuals who are on similar journeys.

There are ticket options for Day Passes and those who require accommodation and transport.

The camp is run solely by volunteers, and individuals wishing to lend some time to help make the event a huge success and warmly welcomed! The team are also still accepting donations of clothing, shoes and accessories. These are important, as the Trans campers will have an opportunity to choose some free items without the anxiety that usually comes with shopping in stores.
