Tobacco, food and alcohol lobbies dictate
THE State Government’s new strategy around smoking contains worthwhile and evidence-based measures such as continuing mass media campaigns and smoking cessation services.
However, the remaining proposals are inadequate for genuine progress towards being the healthiest state by 2025.
Overall, this is a very weak response to the enormity and urgency of Tasmania’s health problems. Again.
Health Minister Michael Ferguson said that he had consulted with health experts and the general community (Mercury, August 17). Unfortunately, he seems to have ignored most of what the health experts said and taken the advice of the tobacco industry, the food industry and the alcohol industry. This is exactly the same pattern which has got us into such trouble. When will they learn?
