Tender let for C cell construction to commence
Southern Waste Solutions have let the tender for site works to commence as the first phase of the construction of the $6 m. Copping C cell.
Downer Edi Works Pty Ltd have been awarded the contract for the siteworks and will commence works in the coming weeks.
Once the earthworks have been completed, construction proper of the C cell will begin with an expected completion date of April 2017.
The seven month construction phase will see 12 people on site, with some $6 m. being invested in the local economy.
In December last year, the State Government announced some $2 m. in assistance to ensure the Copping C cell is constructed.
Southern Waste Solutions CEO Christine Bell said the construction of the C cell will mean that best practice environmental management can occur in Tasmania.
“Tasmania is the only state in Australia that does not have a Category C refuse disposal site,” Ms Bell said.
“As a result, Tasmanian companies, authorities and organisations either stockpile on site or freight hazardous waste interstate for disposal.
“Since announcing this project, we have always said that for Tasmania to be clean and green, it must be responsible with its waste and the construction of a Category C refuse disposal site will achieve this.”
The development will be funded through a combination of some $2 m. funds from the state government, while Clarence City Council will invest a further $1.6 m. and provide $2.4 m. loan to the organisation.
Clarence Mayor Doug Chipman said the C cell is a vital and strategic piece of infrastructure that will underpin future economic developments including major projects where contaminated wasted will need to be managed.
“Southern Waste Solutions is owned by Clarence City, Sorell, Tasman and Kingborough Councils and any returns from this investment are reinvested in the local communities to provide vital services,” Mayor Chipman said.
