Hart shows real heart for Bass in first speech to Parliament
Newly elected Federal Member for Bass Ross Hart MP delivered his first speech to the House of Representatives this morning, with a rallying call to address inequality and better support the most vulnerable members of our community.
“I remain concerned about rising inequality and, it seems, disregard of unemployed and low income people and the marginalised within our communities, whether that is in northern Tasmania, or elsewhere in regional Australia or in our large cities”, Mr Hart said.
“I would like to see practical steps to maintain the social support networks necessary to ensure the health and emotional well-being of the most disadvantaged in our society”, he said.
Mr Hart highlighted his thirty years as a legal practitioner as the basis for his understanding of the local communities in Bass.
“One of the remarkable aspects of a small community, like Tasmania, is that while people might disagree on their politics, they will put that aside if they have confidence in someone as a professional who can focus on the relevant issues”, he said.
Emphasising the commitment he made during his campaign, Mr Hart reiterated his pledge to represent all constituents of Bass.
“I look forward to representing all those who voted for me, and send a message to those who did not…I will do my best to ensure that all residents of Bass will receive representation in this place”, he said.
Mr Hart also used the opportunity to thank his campaign team, supporters and family, attributing his success to the thousands of conversations that he and his team had with the electors of Bass.
“I was fortunate enough to be able to campaign, over an extended period of time, on the central theme of jobs, education and health. There is no doubt in my mind that these issues resonated across the communities I spoke to”, Mr Hart said.
“My first term in this Parliament will be dedicated to holding the Government to account on these key issues”, he added.
