Centenary of Mount Field and Freycinet

Posted on

The Hodgman Liberal Government is a strong supporter of Tasmania’s iconic national parks that create jobs, attract visitors to the state and help grow the economy.

I invite all Tasmanians to help celebrate the centenary of two of our most loved national parks, Freycinet and Mount Field, with a major festival at Freycinet and events at other parks during the centenary weekend of 27-29 August.

The centenary is a significant milestone that presents an opportunity for the community to acknowledge its strong connections to these two parks, and the immense contribution that parks and reserves make to the Tasmanian community

There will be free park entry to all national parks on the centenary weekend and during the school holidays from 24 September to 9 October.

Freycinet National Park will celebrate the centenary weekend with a festival incorporating Aboriginal cultural workshops and dancing, a film festival, historic and art displays and live music, and Mount Field will celebrate with activities including free guided walks and children’s activities, and a community barbecue on the Sunday.

The Tamar Island Wetlands Centre will also celebrate on Saturday 27 August with a breakfast and wetlands guided walk, while Hastings Cave will celebrate with free entry all weekend to the thermal pool, picnic shelters and local walks.

For full details about the events, go to the Tasmania Parks Centenary pages at www.parks.tas.gov.au/centenary.

I encourage all Tasmanians to head along and help celebrate the centenary of these beautiful Tasmanian icons.
Matthew Groom, Minister for Environment, Parks and Heritage
