PLEBISCITE PLAN COST TURNBULL VOTES AND MUST BE DROPPED
ADVOCATES TO LOBBY AGAINST PLEBISCITE & FOR FREE VOTE

Parents of LGBTI Australians say yesterday’s election returned an increased majority of MPs in favour of marriage equality and was a nail in the coffin of Malcolm Turnbull’s proposed plebiscite on the issue.

Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays national spokesperson, Shelley Argent, said,

“With pro-equality Labor MPs replacing Liberals who were against there is now a clear majority of members in favour.”

“A free vote would deliver marriage equality straight away.”

“After a week in which the Coalition’s proposed plebiscite unravelled under close public scrutiny, it’s indisputable that the plebisicte cost the Coalition votes.”

“Malcolm Turnbull must acknowledge he has no mandate for a plebiscite and drop the idea.”

“If he doesn’t, we will do our best to kill it on the floor of Parliament and push for a free vote instead.”

A recent survey of 3000 people conducted by Centre for the Applied Political Psychology for PFLAG showed when voters are made aware of the cost of a plebiscite, the fact it is non-binding and the psychological harm it will cause, support drops dramatically.

To name a few anti marriage equality MPs who lost their seats:
