Tasmanian Disability Enterprise Tastex launches Tasmania’s first community solar project
Tasmania’s first community solar project will be launched by Independent Member for Denison, Andrew Wilkie, on Wednesday 15 June, as Tastex works to secure supported jobs for the future through solar powered savings.
Mr Wilkie is happy to throw his support behind this innovative crowdfunding project that will turn cost savings made through solar power, into meaningful employment for Tasmanians with disabilities.
“Tastex has focused on quality to survive 45 years in a textile industry awash with cheap imports but the challenging economic environment that faces manufacturing isn’t getting any better,” said Mr Wilkie.
“I urge Tasmanians and anyone interested in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels to dig deep for the Tastex Solar Project.”
Tastex use Australian wool and supply uniforms to over 100 schools and organizations Australia wide.
Tastex Executive Officer, Vicki Hawker said she has already been able to increase staffing levels and reduce offcut waste by diversifying the business with new product lines.
“We initially developed our Envirowolly, which are filled with recycled wool offcuts, to reduce our waste, but since they have become hugely successful, they have enabled us to now employ 25 staff, including 17 people with intellectual disabilities,” said Ms Hawker.
“Through our crowd funding campaign we are seeking community support to raise $36,000 to convert our factory to solar power, saving an estimated $7,000 per year, which will ensure we continue to thrive and grow for another 45 years,” Ms Hawker said.
