Pay increase for MPs

Posted on

The Tasmanian Liberals will not be accepting the 10.5 per cent increase in MPs’ pay scheduled to commence tomorrow.

We have consistently maintained that this increase it out of step with community expectations.

Instead, I can confirm that all PLP members will write to the Clerk of the House requesting an adjustment to the salary so that they only receive a total salary increase of 2.3 percent.

Due to the way that salaries for Ministers and other office holders are calculated, in some instances this will mean that members will have their basic salary adjusted down from its current amount, to ensure only a total 2.3 percent increase.

This figure is in line with the Wages Price Index, which is a combination of private and public sector salaries, and was recommended by the Tasmanian Industrial Commission as an appropriate measure.
The Clerk of the House has advised that the letters to the Clerk will need to be received by 7 July.
