Launceston Residents Will Be Heard
A peaceful, colourful community walk made its way today (Friday 17 June 2016) through city streets to the St Johns Street office of the Member for Bass, Mr Andrew Nikolic.
One line of walkers came along St Johns Street from the mall. Another group made their way up York Street from Charles Street.
Everyone carried with them the written concerns of other Bass residents who have felt unheard. Inside Mr Nikolic’s office, the cards and notes were politely presented to staff.
Endorsed by a public meeting on Thursday 9 June, the walk was an opportunity for community members to peacefully express their concerns that “We Will Be Heard” by the local member.
At a public meeting last week speaker after speaker expressed their concerns. Though representing a wide range of interest, their common issue was that they had felt not listened to or dismissed.
Patrick, of Launceston, said, “Australia needs to return to the principles of democracy and not be governed by three word slogans.”
Local resident Megan was very sad that the member for Bass “only feels he needs to hear people he likes or agrees with.”
Others spoke about NBN, underemployment, care for the elderly, the Medicare freeze, renewable energy, LGBTI issues, climate change, Australian aid and Gonski.
Nine people were upset that their questions or perspectives had been blocked on Mr Nikolic’s facebook page.
Lindy said, “The way we treat refugees takes away their hopes. We can act with humanity. There are ways.”
Matthew, from Launceston, added that “Mr Nikolic has a military background and those who ask questions are put into the ‘enemy’ camp.
The people of Bass are saying, ‘We Will Be Heard’.
