Greens back Vision for Trans-Tarkine Track

Posted on

Greens Senator for Tasmania, Peter Whish-Wilson, provides the following comments on the release of a Report on the Preliminary Survey of the Trans-Tarkine Track by the Bob Brown Foundation.

Senator Whish-Wilson said, “I congratulate the Bob Brown Foundation for undertaking some serious groundwork for their proposal to establish a world class walking track in takayna / Tarkine.

“The Tarkine is an area of globally significant heritage values and there is huge interest from locals and visitors to be able to experience the region in an environmentally sensitive way.

“What is so good about this proposal is that detail has been put on the table to allow for consultation and community engagement. Unlike with other recent tourism proposals, the Bob Brown Foundation has put forward a positive proposal with significant background information.

“The Greens propose that $500,000 in federal funds be provided to the State Government to undertake further preparatory work including consultation with Indigenous communities, tourism operators, local government and other stakeholders.

“The Greens call on all political parties to get behind this pledge for immediate feasibility funding. This venture offers an exciting opportunity to allow Tasmania to play to its strengths, highlighting that if we protect our precious places it will provide ongoing sustainable economic and job opportunities for us all,” he concluded.
