Candidates to debate Social Justice issues at electoral forum

Posted on

The Independent Member for Denison Andrew Wilkie MP, Greens Senator Nick McKim, and Labor Senator the Honourable Lisa Singh will face the public at an electoral forum on social justice issues, tomorrow evening at the University of Tasmania’s Centenary Lecture Theatre.

Australia’s treatment of refugees and asylum seekers, cuts to the overseas aid program, and domestic social needs will be amongst the contentious issues discussed, and all members of the public are invited to attend and ask their own questions of the candidates.

The forum is co-hosted by Amnesty’s Tasmanian Refugee Rights Action Group, RESULTS International, A Fairer World, and TasCOSS.

“We are particularly interested in hearing which areas of social justice these politicians would be willing to negotiate on if faced with a ‘shared power’ outcome in the Federal election,” said Carol Bristow, the convenor of Amnesty’s Refugee Rights Group. “In this situation they have the chance to bring about real change.”

“I think there’s a feeling in the electorate that Australia is moving further off track as a global citizen,” said Jeremy Picone, a RESULTS International volunteer. “Tasmanians want to hear what candidates will do to get us back to being the land of the ‘fair go’ for all.”

Representatives of the Liberal Party and Jacqui Lambie Network were invited but are unable to attend.

Where: Centenary Lecture Theatre, Grosvenor Street, UTAS Sandy Bay Campus.
When: 16th of June, 6:00-7:30 p.m.
