Brown Calls for Action on Environmentalist’s Murder
Australian environmentalist Bob Brown says the murder of Berta Caceres underscores the increasing violence and intimidation environmentalists face around the world.
Berta Caceres was shot in her home in La Esperanza, Honduras.
Like Brown, Berta Caceres was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize. She received the award in 2015 for her campaign opposing one of Central America’s biggest hydro-electric projects, the Agua Zarca series of four giant dams.
She was campaigning against a huge hydro-electric project with disastrous social and environment consequences. The dam involves Dutch, Finnish and German companies.
“There is little doubt Berta was murdered by vigilantes for the dam builders”, Brown said.
Bob Brown called on Australian Environment Minister Greg Hunt, recently voted World’s Best Minister, to demand action from the Honduran Government to bring the murderers to justice for one of the world’s worst crimes against an environmentalist.
