Rail Group Angered Over Plans to Give-Up Key Site

Posted on

The group promoting future development of Light Rail in Hobart will fight plans for a Skate Park near the site of the former Glenorchy Rail Station.

The Hobart Northern Suburbs Rail Action Group says Council plans for a new development alongside the rail corridor at KGV is a serious threat to the future of a proposed transit hub in Glenorchy.

The Group’s President, Ben Johnston says “the Skate Park will constrain future development of a key Station which will need platforms, a passing loop, a café, a footbridge and bus interchange.”

Mr Johnston says, “The Glenorchy City Council seems keen to proceed without consulting the community, while contradicting its own pledge to explore opportunities associated with public transport on the rail corridor.”

The Hobart Northern Suburbs Rail Action Group says keeping the site clear for the future development of a Rail Station is a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ and has called on the Council to locate the Skate Park further away from the railway line”.

It’s another planned incursion onto the rail corridor after the Hobart City Council recently revealed plans to encroach on the line at New Town High School.

The recent review by Infrastructure Tasmania said “Light Rail has the potential to become a viable source of transport in the future”.
