ADVOCATES WELCOME CITY OF SYDNEY SUPPORT
Australian Marriage Equality has welcomed the City of Sydney’s commitment to the LGBTI community at tonight’s council meeting. The council unanimously supported Lord Mayor Clover Moore’s motion to:
“Call upon the Australian Parliament not to proceed with a costly and potentially destructive plebiscite on same-sex marriage and instead to legislate forthwith to amend the Marriage Act to enable same sex couples to marry and to ensure that same sex marriages solemnised overseas are recognised in Australia”
Australian Marriage Equality NSW Convenor Shirleene Robinson said:
“We thank the City of Sydney for their ongoing support of marriage equality and congratulate them for representing the views of their constituents who want marriage equality achieved now and through a free vote in the federal parliament”
“We encourage other councils across Australia to join the City of Sydney in urging the Federal Government to legislate for reform rather than engaging in a pointless plebiscite”
The motion was supported by all Independent, Liberal, Labor, and Greens councillors.
