Macquarie Point plans integrated services
The Macquarie Point Development Corporation is seeking proposals from organisations interested in the development and delivery of infrastructure and utility services on the 9.3 ha site, adjoining Hobart’s iconic waterfront.
This will include the provision of electricity, gas, water, sewerage, telecommunications, heating and cooling services as well as the local road network.
As a largely undeveloped site, the corporation intends to take advantage of every opportunity to integrate services wherever possible, with the purpose of achieving greater efficiency and reduction of capital costs.
Corporation CEO, Elizabeth Jack, said today a holistic approach to infrastructure services will deliver important benefits to developers as well as those who will occupy the site in the future, either as residents or commercial enterprises.
The development of underground infrastructure is linked to the corporation’s plan to construct trenches within the site to deal with stormwater and sewerage.
“It is a chance to optimise the precinct’s network of trenches by making them available for the installation of other key services,” Ms Jack said.
“Ultimately, it will provide developers with the option of sourcing key services such as energy, from a central provider, thereby delivering significant savings and efficiencies.”
TasNetworks CEO, Lance Balcombe, has described the initiative as innovative and far-sighted.
Mr Balcombe said that in the case of energy supply, the corporation’s approach will create the opportunity to consider innovative solutions which will deliver energy efficient outcomes and lead to improved utilisation of energy infrastructure.
The corporation is seeking proposals for integrated services from both local and interstate operators. The process will be dovetailed into the much wider expressions of interest invitation which was extended to developers last week.
