George Bailey signs as an ambassador for University of Tasmania
George Bailey
Two names right at home on the world stage – the University of Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes star George Bailey – announced the opening of a wonderful partnership today.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Mike Calford said the signing of Bailey as an ambassador for the University followed a similar agreement with another giant of the game, Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara.
Bailey and Sangakkara will play for the Hobart Hurricanes in the forthcoming Big Bash League season, which is expected to attract a global audience of well over one million viewers.
“George Bailey’s story is an incredibly good fit. He is both well known and admired at home, and immediately recognisable throughout the cricket world. He is a product of Tasmania, but has competed at the highest level on the world stage.
“We see clear parallels between his story and our story – an institution immensely proud of its origins which was recently recognised as being at or above world standing in 48 of our 51 units evaluated in the Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) report.”
Professor Calford said Bailey’s endorsement of the University carried added authenticity as a current student – well underway with his Masters of Business.
“George exemplifies the idea that even that the very best in the world require the backing of a world-class education.
“We hope that along with amplifying our reach in global markets, he fittingly serves as an inspiration to young Tasmanians about the importance of reaching higher levels of education.”
