Water management policy a sensible approach to dry seasons

Posted on

Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) today welcomed the State Government’s new policy on water resource management, which comes into effect during extreme dry conditions.

TFGA CEO Peter Skillern said that policy was an important short term measure to limit production losses during an abnormally dry season.

“This is a sensible and pragmatic approach by the government,’’ Mr Skillern said.

“The policy will ensure that our valuable water resources are equitably distributed between the needs of people, stock, irrigators and the environment,’’ Mr Skillern said.

“The current management framework is not agile enough to overcome the unseasonable conditions that we are currently experiencing. This new policy setting, which will operate for six months before being reviewed, will sensibly address the competing needs for our water resources.

“We can build on this response and enable industry, government and communities to support one another’s goals for the resource, and at the same time build the Tasmanian brand.
