Teddy Sheean Memorial Grants announced
Congratulations to the seven successful recipients of grants under Round 3 of the Teddy Sheean Memorial Grants Program.
The program supports Tasmanian ex-service organisations and clubs to fund minor capital works with grants up to $10,000 available through a competitive application process.
The grants Program takes its name in tribute to the bravery and sacrifice made by Tasmanian sailor Edward “Teddy’’ Sheean who lost his life serving his country and fellow shipmates during a battle in 1942 off the coast of East Timor.
A total of $100,000 was allocated to the program with $56,951 allocated in Round 3 to:
• Claremont Sub Branch – upgrade lighting
• Royal Australian Air Force Association (Tas Branch) – fixed bookcase.
• Bridport Ex-Services Bowls and Community Club – Repairs/renovations to the Alexander Room.
• Hobart Legacy Inc. – Minor works 3/2015.
• Wynyard RSL Sub Branch Inc. – Club room upgrade.
• Circular Head RSL Sub Branch Inc. – Electrical upgrade.
• Scottsdale RSL Sub Branch – Upgrade lighting.
The Tasmanian Government recognises the valuable contribution of Tasmania’s servicemen and women and is committed to supporting the service and ex-service community in Tasmania.
Brief background on Teddy Sheean
In June 1942 Teddy Sheean began his service as an Oerlikon anti-aircraft gunner on the commissioned corvette HMAS Armidale.
On December 1, 1942, Armidale was hit by two aircraft-launched torpedoes and began to sink.
Sheean was wounded, but rather than abandon ship, he strapped himself to his gun and engaged the attacking aircraft as the ship sunk beneath him.
He shot down two planes and crewmates recall seeing tracer rounds rising from beneath the waves as Sheean was dragged underwater, firing until the end.
He died aged 18.
A petition will be tabled in State Parliament next week by Guy Barnett seeking the British Admiralty to reconsider awarding a posthumous Victoria Cross to Teddy Sheean
