National approach preferred for firearms categorisation and licensing

Posted on

The Government notes that the Greens have today tabled a bill to amend the Firearms Act in relation to the Adler shotgun.

We take very seriously our commitment to ensure that firearms are appropriately regulated.

All states are currently working through a national approach to consider the appropriate categorisation of the Adler firearm through the Law, Crime and Justice Council of COAG.

The effectiveness of the National Firearms Agreement has been proven and it is important that no states go it alone outside of this agreement.

It is expected that this matter will be resolved well ahead of the expiry of the current Adler import ban mid next year.
