Lonely Planet
The Tasmanian Government takes its responsibility to protect Tasmania’s wilderness very seriously.
Unfortunately, Lonely Planet appear to have been misinformed by Green propaganda.
The fact is, we have not in any way diminished the amount of Tasmania in reserves, nor do we plan to. More than half of Tasmania is already protected in our reserve system – a level of protection that is extraordinary by any measure.
Under the previous Government 86% or just over 1 million hectares of our old growth forest was in reserve, and this has not, and will not, change.
We recognise the importance and significance of the Tasmania’s World Heritage Area. It is these wonderful wilderness values that attract visitors to our state.
The only changes we have made in relation to our outstanding wilderness areas is to provide for limited sensible and appropriate development, so that even more tourists can experience them.
I will be writing to the publishers of Lonely Planet to ensure they are made aware they have been misinformed.
I respect Lonely Planet and believe the report is a result of an innocent mistake.
Claims wilderness areas have been opened up to forestry and mining under this Government are false.
