Detector dog stats make a joke of Government’s claims
New figures released under Right To Information reveal just 28% of flights into Tasmania are being checked by detector dogs.
In the North West, no flights are being checked at Wynyard Airport while between just 4-6% of flights at Devonport are met by a sniffer dog.
“These figures make a mockery of the Liberals’ claims that they are on track to check 100% of flights,” Mr Green said.
“Just last month the Government was crowing about how well its doing when it comes to biosecurity and the use of detector dogs.”
“For the first time, we will have the capacity to target 100 per cent of flights at our major airports with detector dog teams…” Rene Hidding – Acting Primary Industries Minister – October 20
“The Government has failed to produce a shred of evidence to back up its claim and these figures make it look like a complete fantasy,” Mr Green said.
“Labor’s been advocating for more resources for Biosecurity Tasmania after widespread reports of staff under immense stress.
“It’s time the Liberal Government took the issue of biosecurity more seriously.”
