Big Picture backflip a win for students and parents
Labor welcomes the Liberal Government’s spectacular backdown on Launceston’s Big Picture School.
Shadow Education Minister Michelle O’Byrne said while it’s embarrassing for the Government, today’s announcement is very welcome news.
“This is a huge win for the parents, students and educators who have fought hard to keep the Big Picture School open,” Ms O’Byrne said.
In September Minister Jeremy Rockliff told Parliament:
“City Campus will be moving to a new, more suitable location at Launceston College site to provide greater options for flexibility for students.” – Jeremy Rockliff, Question Time (24/9/2015)
“It’s great the Government has belatedly seen the value of not only keeping the campus open, but allowing it to grow.
“Time and time again we’ve seen the Liberals have to backflip on short-sighted policy decisions.
“Today’s announcement comes during the same week the Education Minister backed down on Online Access Centres, delaying a decision about their futures.
“Labor welcomes news that Big Picture will be a stand-alone school with its own principal.
“Engaging the Underwood Centre is also welcomed by Labor and is consistent with our policy to ensure that education policy is not subject to political whim and to establish a 20 year vision.
“Congratulations to everyone who fought hard and managed to reverse Minister Rockliff’s decision.”
