TURNBULL GOVERNMENT HATES ANIMALS AS MUCH AS THE ABBOTT GOVERNMENT DID

Posted on

Any hope that a new Prime Minister would improve animal welfare has been dashed by Minister for Cruelty Barnaby Joyce’s trip to Jakarta to drum up business for the live cattle export industry.

Nothing has changed. The live animal export trade is still systemically cruel, not in Australia’s economic self-interest and lacks popular support. But still the Agriculture Minister is nothing more than the lackey for an industry that benefits very few people while mistreating an enormous number of animals.

New Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull needs to respond to the overwhelming public opposition to the live animal export trade by putting in place a plan to wind up the industry and resurrect the Australian red meat processing sector.

A good first step would be to corral Barnaby Joyce.
