Students Rally for Divestment at UTAS as Uni Cans Negotiations
Students will rally on the Sandy Bay campus today to demand that the University of
Tasmania divest from fossil fuels. Students are frustrated that the University has cancelled a
meeting scheduled for today, to discuss the important issue.’
“We were due to present our case for divestment from the fossil fuel industry to the
investment committee in mid-October,” said Fossil Free Spokesperson Alex Tomlinson.
“The university is refusing to listen to student’s concerns so we will be protesting with a rally
on campus,” said Mr Redpath.
“We will stage a peaceful rally outside the Vice Chancellor’s Office, there will be music,
banner painting, speakers and chanting; we’re aiming to create a relaxed and friendly
atmosphere.
“The rally will start with music at 1.00pm, we encourage all those concerned about climate
change to come along and protest the university’s investment in an industry which is
destroying our planet.”
“Despite being a leading institution in climate research, UTAS still has approximately $30
million invested in fossil fuel companies.”
“It’s incredibly frustrating to be taught about the need for climate action by UTAS, whilst
they invest in the industry that causes climate change.”
