Risdon Prison Incident
I am very concerned that a custodial officer was today allegedly assaulted by a prisoner in the maximum security section of the Risdon Prison Complex at about 2pm.
The custodial officer has been taken to hospital for treatment of a facial wound.
The Tasmania Prison Service will provide appropriate support and assistance to the officer concerned.
Tasmania Police is investigating the incident.
Violence against correctional staff is totally unacceptable and there is simply no excuse for behaviour which amounts to a deliberate act of harm.
The Government reaffirms its commitment to introduce minimum mandatory sentences for serious assaults against custodial officers.
