Record number of Tasmanians in work
More Tasmanians have a job today than ever before.
Today’s ABS figures confirm 242,000 Tasmanians are in work, the highest level ever achieved in this State.
Since the March 2014 election 7,200 new jobs have been created and there are 2,900 fewer unemployed people looking for work.
In September the unemployment rate stood at 6.2 per cent, or down 0.2 per cent on the previous month.
Our unemployment rate is now lower than South Australia and Queensland, and equal to Western Australia and Victoria.
During the election we promised to bring Tasmania’s unemployment rate at least in line with the national figure over the first four years.
Today this has been achieved, with Tasmania’s rate of 6.2 per cent equal with the national unemployment rate. This is the lowest rate since November 2011.
But there is still a lot of work to do, we want to drive the unemployment rate as low as possible, and see even more Tasmanians in jobs.
These latest figures are further evidence that our long-term Plan for a brighter future is working.
